New year, new mantra

See this content in the original post

With last year now firmly in the rearview mirror, let’s start off 2021 with a new mantra, shall we?

“Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself.” - Marcus Aurelius

These eight simple words provide ample opportunities for us to be and do better this year.

Here are some areas where applying this mantra can make a real difference in our lives and the lives of others:

COVID-19

While 2020 is over, unfortunately our battle with COVID-19 is not.

Rather than growing angry and frustrated with the actions of others, let’s start by reevaluating our own actions with fresh eyes, especially as real COVID fatigue sets in. Refocusing on being strict with ourselves can also help remind us to be more empathetic towards others instead of rushing to assign fault or blame.

Everyone’s ability to deal with this pandemic is different and as we are all irrational human beings, none of us are going to be perfect. While we might not agree with how others handle their situation, let’s remember we’re all just doing our best given the circumstances.

Let’s work on judging less and caring more.

Strict with yourself, tolerant with others.

Relationships

How often do we hold our family, friends, and loved ones to ridiculous standards? And how often do we apply these standards because we’re frustrated or upset by something completely unrelated to them?

For example, my 7-year-old talks and acts like an adult sometimes. However, she is not an adult and it’s unfair for me to expect that type of behavior from her.

As an adult, I don’t get to act like a 7-year-old just because she is and as her parent, it’s my job to set a good example for her. This is easier said than done but it is certainly something I can work on.

Strict with yourself, tolerant with others.

Finances

Are you allowing apathy around your financial situation to act as a convenient excuse or justification for your financial decisions? And is one of the thoughts going through your head right now something along the lines of, “Well everybody else is doing it”?

And if you already have your finances in order, what does your current charitable giving look like? Does your giving match your stated intentions or would you be embarrassed if forced to share that information publicly?

Speaking from experience, I know in the not-too-distant past that I personally would have been embarrassed. It wasn’t intentional but in being honest with myself, I realized I wasn’t doing enough based on my stated intentions.

We can always come up with reasons and excuses why right now is not the right time. But if we’re honest with ourselves, now is always the best time to take ownership and start being the person we intend to be.

Strict with yourself, tolerant with others.

We’ve just scratched the surface on how we can benefit by applying this mantra and hopefully you find it helps as you set your intentions for the year ahead.

And if you need someone to talk with who can listen without judgement and act as your guide through this process, please know that I’m here and happy to help.
