How to get unstuck
Whether you’re wrestling with a tough decision or just lacking motivation in the moment to do the thing you know you need to do, we all find ourselves stuck from time to time.
Rather than continuing to toil over a tough decision or waiting for enough willpower to magically show up at your front door, I find it helps to have a list of easily accessible activities that you can do when you find yourself in a rut.
Here are a few from my list:
Take a walk outside
Read a book
Play tennis
Sometimes a quick walk around the block or reading a chapter from a good book is all I need to see things from a different perspective. And while playing tennis always provides a good physical workout, I find it helps clear my mind and improve my mental well being, too.
What are two or three activities that you find helpful when you’re stuck?
Think about it and write them down. And if you’re not exactly sure what belongs on your list, what are some activities that you regularly do that you rarely, if ever, regret doing after they are done?
For example, I’ve gotten caught in a thunderstorm before while walking, stopped reading plenty of books I no longer found interesting, and have played more bad tennis matches than I can even count. However, I don’t think I’ve ever regretted my choice to partake in those activities, even when I find myself in those situations. That’s a pretty good litmus test to apply to any activities that might belong on your own list.
So whenever you find yourself overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, take that as your cue to bust out your newly created list of activities that help you get unstuck. Because sometimes all it takes is a quick walk around the block to get back on track.
